Michael S. SteeleLt. Governor Michael S. Steele Leads MIDC Trade Mission to Israel; Announces Maryland/Israel Incubator Partnership

During his trade mission to Israel from November 5 to 11, 2005, Maryland Lt. Governor Michael S. Steele announced the formation of the Maryland/Israel Incubator Partnership, a unique program between Maryland and Israeli incubators to welcome each otherís companies and provide up to six months free office space. The Emerging Technology Center in Baltimore and the Misgav Technology Center in the Galilee are the first incubators to participate in the program. Four other Maryland and Israeli incubators will be joining the program.

Global Medical Networks of Israel is the first company participating in the program. Developers of medical information systems, Global Medical Networks is opening their U.S. office at the Emerging Technology Center.

The purpose of Lt. Governor Steeleís trip was to expand Marylandís economic ties with Israel and build on the programs Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., initiated during his trade mission to Israel in 2003. Participants in the trip included MIDC Chairman Hanan Sibel and Executive Director Barry Bogage; Henry Yaffe, CEO, New Ridge Technologies; Janis Peters, Senior Business Development Manager, Montgomery County Department of Economic Development; Paul Ellington, Chief of Staff, Office of the Lt. Governor; and Ed Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff, Office of Governor Robert Ehrlich, Jr. †

Lt. Governor Steele met with Israelís top homeland security officials including Minister of Public Security Gideon Ezra and National Security Advisor Giora Eiland, to follow up on the Maryland/Israel partnership on homeland security that Gov. Robert Ehrlich initiated two years ago. The partnership is pursuing two tracks: professional exchanges between Maryland and Israelís homeland security officials and economic development opportunities between companies. The professional exchanges have included Maryland hosting an international US-Israel Critical Infrastructure Security Conference and a delegation visit of Marylandís senior security officials to Israel. The economic development track has led to two Israeli homeland security companies opening offices in Maryland.

Lt. Governor Steele also spoke at the Gateway Exhibition of the Prime Ministerís Conference on Exports and International Cooperation and met with several Israeli technology businesses, five of which are opening offices in Maryland:

Check Point Software Acquires Maryland-Based Sourcefire for $225 Million

Check Point Software LogoInternet security market leader Check Point (Nasdaq: CHKP) announced that it is acquiring Columbia-based Sourcefire Network Security for $225 million.

Check Point, headquartered in Ramat Gan, Israel, said that Sourcefire would strengthen its portfolio of Internet and network security products, allowing it to compete in the fast-growing Intrusion Prevention and Network Awareness Internet security sectors.

Lt. Governor Michael S. Steele met with Check Point officials during his trade mission to Israel to discuss the future of the Columbia operation and its 140 jobs. Company CFO Eyal Desheh said Check Point is impressed with the technical talent at Sourcefire and looks forward to growing the facility as its new products succeed in the market.

The deal has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies and the stockholders of Sourcefire, and is expected to close by the first quarter of 2006, subject to regulatory approvals.

Maryland and Israel Extend Marine Biotechnology R&D Partnership

Lt. Governor Michael S. Steele announced that Maryland and Israel will extend the Maryland/Israel Marine Biotechnology Research Partnership original established in November 2003 during Governor Robert Ehrlich's visit to Israel. The collaborative R&D program is a partnership between the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) Center of Marine Biotechnology (COMB) and several Israeli research institutions including Tel Aviv University and the Israeli Oceanographic and Limnological Institute. The announcement was made as part of the Lt. Governorís five-day trade mission to Israel.

The joint research program focuses on the development of new environmentally sustainable and economically feasible aquaculture technologies and explores new avenues for the production of marine natural compounds with pharmaceutical potential The project was initiated by the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture and the Maryland/Israel Development Center on behalf of the State of Maryland. Both governments initially provided $250,000 annually for three years to fund the research. The Lt. Governorís announcement extends the yearly funding for an additional three years.

IBM To Construct R&D Center in Ashkelon

IBM LogoIBM (NYSE:IBM) will set up a plant and R&D center in Ashkelon, The Associated: Jewish Community Federation and MIDCís Israeli sister-city. The facility will employ 50 software engineers.

Ashkelon Mayor Roni Mehatzri noted that this was the first success of a concerted effort to attract high-tech companies to the city. Mehatzri hopes that many more international companies will follow IBM, thus helping Ashkelon boost pay levels and improve employment conditions for university graduates in the area.
