The third round of MarketReach America was held earlier this month for five selected Israeli homeland security companies.

During the week-long strategic planning conference, the Israeli entrepreneurs participated in workshops and off-site meetings focusing on the structure of the homeland security market, strategic planning, negotiation strategies, investment and other U.S. business development topics. More than 50 Maryland businessmen and women volunteered their time to consult with the entrepreneurs on American business practices and the homeland security industry, and provide access for the entrepreneurs to potential business partners.

The participating companies now return to Israel for one-on-one professional consulting by the MIDCís Israeli representatives, The Trendlines Group, to develop a strategy for U.S. market entry. Implementing the strategy is the last phase of MarketReach America, through a business development trip back to the U.S. to meet potential customers, investors and strategic partners.

For merchandise protection (apparel and accessories, electronics, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, electronic parts, jewelry and cosmetics, sporting goods), the ink can be printed as part of a security label or packaging material. MIDC Board Member Awarded National Medal of Science

Dr. Solomon Snyder, an MIDC board member and director of the Department of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University, was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Bush at a White House ceremony March 14th. He was among eight recipients selected by the National Science Foundation to receive the nationís highest science honor.

Dr. Snyder has for decades pioneered discoveries about communication mechanisms within and between brain cells. His discovery of the brainís opiate receptor in the early l970s was recognized with a Lasker Award and is widely credited with launching a generation of research into neuropeptides, receptors and behavior.

The MIDC congratulates Dr. Snyder on this monumental achievement and wishes him much continued success in the future.

Hopkins Doctor Coordinates American-Israeli Cancer Conference

Dr. Hyam I. Levitsky, professor of oncology, medicine and urology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, is one of three co-directors of the first American-Israeli cancer conference -- Israel's largest scientific conference in at least four years ñ which will take place in Jerusalem in late March. About 200 cancer experts from institutions in Israel and the United States are expected to attend.

According to Dr. Levitsky, the conference will focus on leveraging the history of productive collaborations that Israeli and American researchers have shared in the understanding and treatment of cancer. The goal of the conference is to ìspark ideas, collaborations, and interest among research fellows in visiting institutions abroad,î Levitsky said.

Israeli Life Sciences Delegation Comes to Maryland

On April 18, 2005, a delegation of Israeli Bio-Tech companies will make a stop in Maryland as part of its annual tour of the major hotbeds of the U.S. biotech industry. The one-day conference will feature speakers and panelists from the biotech and investment communities, and will showcase some of the hottest Israeli startups currently emerging from the Israeli market.
