Emergency Economic Program Approved Israelís government has approved an emergency economic package, cutting $11 billion from its budget. The plan, developed by Minister of Finance Benjamin Netanyahu, comes in the face of the worst recession in the countryís history and two years of negative growth. The program, which has met with much criticism, includes wage cuts and dismissals for government workers, cutbacks in welfare and new immigrant funding, an increase in the retirement age to 67, 10% reductions to all ministry budgets (except the Defense Ministry), and cuts to many other programs. In 2002, Israelís GDP dropped 1.1% and unemployment reached 10.3%; in February 2003, the government deficit reached $579 million, the highest 30-day overdraft on record. Source: Haíaretz
