
Following is a short list of highlighted projects initiated and brought to fruition by the Maryland/Israel Development Center, benefiting the economies of Maryland and Israel.

The MIDC was instrumental in bringing together a consortium of Maryland and Israeli private sector businesses and research institutions to conduct joint aquaculture research. The original Maryland partners were AquaPharm Technologies Corporation and the Center of Marine Biotechnology of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute. The Israeli partners consisted of Ma'agan Michael Fish Breeding Center and the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Institute. The project was awarded a $3 million grant from the then-newly formed U.S.-Israel Science and Technology Commission. The research resulted in a new product, AquaGrow, containing enzymes to increase the health and size of fish grown in captivity. It is currently being marketed by Advanced BioNutrition of Maryland. -
The MIDC identified and introduced the executives of Endo Image of Maryland, a manufacturer of endoscopes, and Controlled Micro Devices (CMD) of Israel, a software designer with a program that enhances images captured by endoscopes. The joint venture received a $100,000 grant from the Bi-national Industrial Research & Development (BIRD) Foundation to integrate CMD's software into Endo Image's endoscopes.

During an MIDC trade mission to Israel, Sylvan Learning Systems of Baltimore announced a $3 million investment in Kidum Group, an Israeli education technology company. Also, the University of Maryland, College Park Department of Government and Politics announced the expansion of its International Communication and Negotiation Simulations (ICONS) program among Israeli high schools. ICONS is an Internet-based foreign policy simulation and educational program.

Trellis Photonics, an Israeli fiber optics switching technology firm, established its corporate headquarters in Columbia. The company had expected to employ at least 200 workers within two years of the formation of its Maryland presence; unfortunately, market conditions forced the company to abandon those plans. Nonetheless, TrellisÃs then-CEO credited the MIDC for providing "tremendous on-the-ground-support" to the company.

The MIDC raised $192,000 and created the Fulbright - Maryland/Israel Development Center Scholars Program to encourage cooperation among the scientific communities of Maryland and Israel. Two scientific collaborations were formed: one between Tel Aviv University and the Institute of Human Virology to conduct research for an AIDS vaccine, the second between Bar Ilan University and the Institute for Advanced Research in Biotechnology focusing on proteomics.

Since its founding in 1992, the MIDC has conducted 8 trade missions to Israel. Mission participants have included Maryland Governor Parris N. Glendening, state Senator Barbara Hoffman, Secretaries of the Department of Business and Economic Development James Fielder and Mike Lewin, and many business people.
