New Call for Proposals issued by BIRD Energy, a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Israel Ministry of Energy and Water Resources

The current call for proposals announced by BIRD Energy is in its fourth funding cycle for U.S.-Israel joint Project Proposals with a focus on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. To be considered, a project proposal must include R&D cooperation between two companies or cooperation between a company and a university/research institution (one from the U.S. and one from Israel).

 Baltimore, MD - Dec. 14 - The Maryland/Israel Development Center (MIDC) last night hosted its third annual holiday networking reception at the University of Maryland BioPark. The evening drew upwards of 70 people, mostly business professionals in the hi-tech, biotech and financial sectors.

The Maryland/Israel Trendlines Fund L.P. is making its first major investment in NovoSpeech Ltd., an Israeli developer of speech recognition technology.

The $550,000 investment will help NovoSpeech develop a new algorithm that will make speech recognition technology more accurate. The company expects to achieve greater than 95 percent success rate with its speech recognition software.

NovoSpeech is working with a major manufacturer to embed its software in its Bluetooth devices and use the speech recognition technology as firmware.

The Maryland/Israel Development Center sees itself as a matchmaker — not of a romantic kind but an economic one. For the past 19 years, the nonprofit group in Baltimore has been connecting Maryland companies with Israeli partners to promote trade and investments.

Most recently, MIDC helped secure funding for two Maryland companies to do business with Israeli firms through the Israel-U.S. Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation.

Abba David Poliakoff’s “V8 moment” hit when he was plotting the Maryland/Israel Development Center’s future strategy early this year. If the nonprofit he chaired was doing so well in helping grow and develop Israeli companies, imagine what it could do as a for-profit company.

The Baltimore center has since set up its own venture capital fund, a for-profit subsidiary, to fund early-stage technology companies in Israeli incubators. The fund has so far raised $3.8 million toward a goal of $10 million, much of it from investors in Baltimore’s Jewish and business communities.
